HUD & battery
The HUD replaces the Windows volume pop-up with a display that blends into Poni, and shows screen brightness too. The battery indicator shows how much charge your laptop has left and lets you know when it's low.
Settings → HUD and Settings → Battery
Volume and brightness
Press a volume key on your keyboard. The closed Poni widens and shows a speaker icon, Volume (or Muted), a bar and the level. After about 1.5 seconds it goes away. The mute key turns the sound off and on.
The HUD shows every time the volume changes, also when you change it somewhere else, like the Windows Quick Settings. While Poni is open, the same bar shows briefly in the middle of its top bar.
When the screen brightness changes, for example with your laptop's brightness keys, Poni shows a sun icon and the level. This works on laptop screens and on monitors that support DDC/CI.
HUD style
- Inline (in Poni): the icon, bar and level show inside the closed Poni. This is the default.
- Panel with slider (below): the icon shows in Poni and a slider appears below it. While the slider is showing, you can drag it to set the volume or brightness.
HUD options
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Enable HUD | Shows the volume and brightness HUD in Poni. Default: on. |
| Take over volume keys | Poni handles the volume keys, so the Windows volume pop-up doesn't appear. Each press changes the volume by 2%. When it's off, the Windows pop-up comes back and Poni's HUD still shows as well. Only works while Enable HUD is on. Default: on. |
| Brightness HUD | Shows the HUD when the brightness changes. For laptop screens and DDC/CI monitors. Default: on. |
| Style | Inline (in Poni) or Panel with slider (below). Default: Inline (in Poni). |
Under Try it there are Volume and Brightness sliders to test the HUD. If Poni can't change your screen's brightness, the Brightness slider shows n/a.
Battery
On a laptop, a battery icon shows at the top right of the open Poni. Its colour tells you how it's doing:
- Green with a bolt: charging.
- Red: below the Low battery warning at level, with the charger unplugged.
- Yellow: Windows Battery saver is on.
Hover over the battery icon for details, like 3h 12m remaining, Charging or Fully charged.
When you plug in the charger, the closed Poni shows Charging with the battery level for a few seconds. When you unplug it, it shows On battery. When the battery falls to the warning level with the charger unplugged, Poni shows Low battery in red.
| Option | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show battery | Shows the battery icon in the open Poni. When it's off, the charger and low battery alerts don't show either. Default: on. |
| Show percentage | The percentage next to the battery icon. Default: on. |
| Charging animation | A short alert when you plug in or unplug the charger. Default: on. |
| Low battery warning at | The low battery level, 5–50%. Poni alerts you once when the battery drops past it. Default: 20%. |
Below the options is a status line, like Battery: 85% · plugged in. On a desktop PC without a battery it says No battery detected (desktop PC), and the battery indicator stays hidden.
Want to see the battery without opening Poni? Pick Battery for the left or right side. See The closed Poni.
